Tire size decoder: read your sidewall

Every tire has its size printed on the sidewall. Type it in to see what the numbers mean, compare another size, and check how old the tire is.

Decode a tire size

Tap a part of the size to see what it means.

Find the letters DOT on the sidewall. The last four digits are the week and the year it was made: 2321 is week 23 of 2021.

Other marks on the sidewall

DOT

Date of manufacture

The four digits at the end of the DOT code give the week and year the tire was made.

M+S

Mud and snow

A marking on many all-season tires. It is a label, not a winter traction test.

3PMSF

Mountain and snowflake

A symbol showing the tire passed a snow traction test. Look for it on winter tires.

XL

Extra load

The tire is built to carry a higher load than a standard tire of the same size.

Swapping tires for the season

A common rule of thumb is to put winter tires on when the daily temperature stays around 7 °C or below, and to take them off when it stays above that. Look for the mountain and snowflake symbol on winter tires, and keep your summer or all-season set somewhere dry.
